Not content with producing only the second pure-blood road car in its history, McLaren also developed a GT3 version of the MP4-12C in parallel with the road-going supercar. The MP4-12C GT3 was to become the first McLaren to compete in FIA GT racing since the 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning F1 GTR.

Featuring the same carbon-fiber "MonoCell" chassis as its sibling, the MP4-12C GT3 boasts an all-new engine and transmission arrangement that creates 493 bhp, an aero package featuring a new front splitter and adjustable rear wing, and the steering wheel from McLaren’s MP4-24 Formula One car.
It made its world debut at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed, piloted by McLaren’s World Champion F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, and its first competitive bow at the 24 Hours of Spa a few weeks later.
