Forza Motorsport – Dan Greenawalt Explains What It Means To Run a Game Studio

Dan Greenawalt is the Forza franchise Creative Director at Microsoft and has been since the early days of the Forza Motosport franchise in 2005.

In a recent interview by Game Stack Live, Dan explains how they run a game studio such as Turn 10 Studios, and how to keep the individual development teams connected while growing a consistent team culture.

Turn 10 Studios is an American video game developer based in Redmond, Washington. The company was established in 2001 under Microsoft Game Studios (now known as Xbox Game Studios) to develop the Forza series for the Xbox console platforms. The most recent game developed solely by Turn 10 Studios is Forza Motorsport 7, released in 2017.

During the 2019 December community stream on the Mixer Media Channel, Turn10 Studios revealed a few details of the next game in the Forza Motorsport franchise (Find it at the 57:30 mark). While not confirming the name Forza Motorsport 8, Turn 10 Creative Director Chris Esaki revealed that last year, the developers performed a “first studio-wide playtest” of the upcoming racing title and said that the overall product is a vastly different and amazing experience in comparison to previous iterations of the game.

It has been hinted that Forza Motorsport 8, or whatever the name or game might be, will be accompanying Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox Series X console at release. Turn 10 Studios has not yet revealed any release schedule, but assuming the game might release as a launch title for the Xbox Series X, the holiday season of 2020 might be a good guess.
