Is Slightly Mad Studios Working On A Next-Gen 4K Console Named Mad Box?

It is safe to say that Slightly Mad Studios CEO Ian Bell, now and then comes across as being… Slightly Mad. And we mean that in a good way! Only 3 weeks ago, Ian posted a comment on the GTplanet forums stating that SMS is working on a new project that will “blow anything else, planned by anyone else, out of the water… ”

Ian Bell, can be very passionate about his projects. So at that point, we were sure that it would be a matter of time before something else popped up. That time is now.

In one of his latest social media sessions, Ian Bell posted a rather peculiar Tweet:

The Mad Box is coming.

And there was more. Somewhat later Mr. Bell added:

What is the Mad Box? It’s the most powerful console ever built… It’s literally ‘Mad’… You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS? You want a full engine for free to develop your games on it? You have it.

And from there on, things got even weirder. A trusted Ian Bell follower and keen observer reacted with a question:

Shouldn’t VR be at 90 FPS?

Ian Bell replied with a rather innovating answer:

60 per eye…

It’s ‘right’ when your console can run at 120 FPS. We’re not playing around here. This is beyond next gen. For too long have subtle iterations been accepted. Time to raise the bar, substantially. 🙂

While we did at first not take this Tweet to seriously and thought this might just have been the result of a successful SMS New Year’s reception with free drinks for everyone, we were surprised to see the message Re-Tweeted on the official Slightly Mad Studios account.

And honestly… We would not be surprised to see Slightly Mad Studios take an initiative when it comes to raising the bar. They have already done it with their WMD (World of Mass Development) platform, and to a point set a benchmark for racing game graphics with their Project CARS franchise. So why would they not do it again in the hardware world?
