Straight4 has revealed a classic British sports car coming to the Project Motor Racing simulation project in the form of the rather special 2004 Morgan Aero 8.
The Morgan Aero 8 will join already announced classic GT cars such as the Mosler MT900R, the Lister Storm, Gillet Vertigo, Saleen S7-R, and the 2004 TVR Tuscan T400R.
As usual, keep in mind that all media included represents a work in progress.
2004 Morgan Aero 8
While the road-going 2004 Morgan Aero 8 was a sporty and capable machine, the 2004 Morgan Aero 8 race car was a different beast altogether, designed and engineered for competitive motorsport. The Aero 8 served as the basis for Morgan’s return to international GT racing in the early 2000s.
The specific 2004 iteration would have been developed to meet the regulations of the racing series it was intended for, most likely the FIA GT Championship or similar GT categories of the time. The initial racing version was known as the Aero 8 GTN. The 2004 Morgan Aero 8 race car followed Morgan’s return to Le Mans in 2002 after a long hiatus. While the 2002 effort with the Aero 8 GTN didn’t finish, the lessons learned from the GTN program directly influenced the development of subsequent Aero 8 racing variants.
The 2004 car was powered by a 4.4L, Mader-tuned BMW M62 V8 engine that was significantly tuned and modified to produce considerably more power than the road car’s 282 bhp. It produced over 500 bhp at 6,900 rpm, which were numbers typical for GT cars of this era. Instead of the road car’s manual transmission, the race car used a 6-speed sequential gearbox. Overall, the 2004 Morgan Aero 8 was significantly improved in terms of aerodynamics, weight, power, handling, and safety.
