Why this LOLA T280? It does not match the heritage of the French car!

The answer is indirectly yes, because it was one of the opponents and spectators of a French brand in the world championship in 1972.

"Already in 1972, the specifications were the Lola T280 one of the best sports cars 3 liters. Its performance, its scarcity and the challenge raised by Jo Bonnier at the wheel engaging did the rest. With its monocoque chassis, a Ford Cosworth engine and an aerodynamic carrier carefully, the Lola T280 of Eric Broadley (founder of the brand) seems to be one of the most successful prototypes . It does not take less for Jo Bonnier, importer of the brand in Continental Europe, to launch his stable in the category of the most demanding Endurance World Championship. Persuaded to have financial support from Ford, the company does not seem too great … but the arrival of the famous John Wyer Mirage Ford disrupt the deal. The Lola equipped with engines Cosworth F1 began often reveal the trials and animated the early races. Only their teething problems and a lack of clear, prevented them to aim higher.

For the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1972, the team finally gets a major financial support with the union of Swiss cheese producers, Switzerland. In addition the withdrawal of Ferrari, judging its engines insufficiently resistant, suggests great opportunities. outclassed by the powerful Matra , the Lola not only the role of mere extras and show once again very fast from the start, occupying the same leading the race for the third round, while setting a new lap record!
