After a decade of track triumphs with the C5-R and C6.R GT1 , the birth of the C6.R GT2 in 2009 represented a slight departure from the proven methodology developed by General Motors and Pratt & Miller.

The change, effectively forced by the widespread replacement of the GT1 category with a unified GT class containing GT2’s stringent homologation requirements, resulted in a racing Corvette that was more closely related to its road-going cousins than any of its recent predecessors.

Out went the GT1 racer’s steel skeleton and carbon brakes, and in came the C6 ZR1 ‘s hydroformed aluminum frame and body styling, an aerodynamic package that included a smaller front splitter and rear wing, and a race-prepared 485-bhp 5.5-liter GM V8 that shared its architecture with the Corvette C6 Z06’s LS7 powerplant.

The C6.R GT2’s first full year of competition yielded victory at Petit Le Mans in the American Le Mans Series’ 2010 season finale and fourth place in the final team standings—a solid base on which to build a whole new racing dynasty.
