Assetto Corsa Vs Real Life – The Nurburgring GP Circuit

Assetto Corsa

The AC Nurburgring GP Circuit – As real as it gets.

Yesterday Kunos Simulazioni released a new laser scanned track as part of the V0.7 update of the Assetto Corsa simulator. As far as we know, this is the world first laser scanned version of the Nurburgring GP Circuit. A laser scan, or object scan is a distance measurement performed by a laser pointing in every direction to make it possible to capture shapes and  objects in its path. When using this three-dimensional laser-scanning technology to scan a racing circuit it will result in a perfect and very accurate blueprint of the environment, buildings and landscapes. The scan will also register the bump map, camber, cracks, curbs and elevations of a track surface. When this blueprint is utilised as a measurement tool by 3D modelers, it should result in a virtual one on one copy of its real world counterpart.

Next to iRacing.com who where releasing laser scanned tracks for their iRacing platform since day one, also  Kunos Simulazioni has been using the technology to bring highly accurate tracks to their Assetto Corsa Simulator. In this video produced by DigiProst we can see the results of a final product. The laser scanned version of the German Nurburgring GP Circuit as implemented in Assetto Corsa.Even tough season time, speed and viewing angle are slightly different, it’s safe to say that the result is a realistic copy of the real word venue. Al the track elevations, guard rails, buildings and modeled objects are virtualised as accurate as possible with the current technology. It’s nice to have a realistic game experience, but this also means that the Simulator can act as a virtual training tool for real world racing drivers. With laser scanned tracks it is very easy to build a mind map of a circuit without ever have visited the scene. This can cut cost and time and will lead to a better prepared driver .  (Comparison Video by DigiProst)
