Super GT
The Japanese Super GT is the pinnacle of grand touring car racing in Japan and is widely considered the fastest GT championship in the world. It is famous for its unique multi-class format, where two different categories of cars race on the track at the same time, creating constant overtaking and tactical drama.
The series is divided into two classes, the GT500 and GT300. The top division GT500 silhouette cars are powered by a 2.0L Turbo I4 engine that can deliver 6550+ hp. The Production-based GT300 cars are using engines that produce roughly between 400 and 550 hp. The two classes can easily be identified by their headlight and decal color, White for the GT500 and Yellow for the GT300.
To keep the championship competitive until the final round, Super GT uses a handicap system. Cars earn Success Weight (ballast) based on their points scored in previous rounds.
Japan Grand Touring Car Championship
The Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC) is the legendary predecessor to the modern Super GT series. The highly modified production cars ran from 1993 to 2004, and the series is widely considered the “Golden Era” of Japanese motorsports.
The JGTC (GT500) was defined by the fierce battle between Japan’s flagship sports cars, such as the Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32, R33, R34), Toyota Supra (JZA80), and the Honda NSX. The GT300 was a playground for unique JDM builds, such as the RE Amemiya Mazda RX-7s, Subaru Imprezas, Toyota MR2s, and the occasional ASL Garaiya. Unlike today’s spec-chassis rules, these cars felt more like their road-going siblings.
