Straight4 revealed some new preview screenshots of the historic IMSA GTO class coming to its forthcoming Project Motor Racing title, with a first highlight, showcasing the iconic 1989 Audi 90 IMSA GTO.
From the 1980s until its reclassification in the early 1990s, the IMSA GTO class (Grand Touring over 2.5 Liters) was a very competitive and stunning class within the IMSA GT Championship in North America. It was distinguished by serving as a basis for highly engineered, highly modified “silhouette” versions of production vehicles, which sparked a fierce industrial and technological competition.
The IMSA GT Championship was founded in 1971, alongside the GTU class. (Grand Touring Under 2.5 Liters)
By the late 1980s, the GTO class had evolved into a “wild west” of technology, where manufacturers like Audi, Roush/Mercury, Nissan, and Chevrolet threw enormous resources at their cars, often generating well over 700 horsepower. The class was eventually reclassified as GTS (Grand Touring Supreme) in 1992 as rules were refined.

During its one season of competition, the 1989 Audi 90 IMSA GTO, a radical, purpose-built racing vehicle, dominated the GTO class of the American IMSA Camel GT Championship.
The incredibly fast and highly sophisticated car is remembered as a loud, fire-spitting monster that brought rally-derived Group B technology to American circuit racing. It was driven by racing driver legends such as Walter Röhrl, Hans-Joachim Stuck, and Hurley Haywood, who won seven of the thirteen races it participated in.
With a body that was intended to mimic the production Audi 90 sedan, though only the outer roof panel was really shared with the road car, it was essentially a silhouette racer, a pure racing machine constructed around a steel space-frame chassis. Lightweight composite materials were used for the remainder of the radically wide bodywork.
The Audi 90 IMSA GTO is powered by a 2.2-liter, DOHC, 20-valve, turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine, based on the Group B Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes Peak car powerplant. The engine produced a massive 720 horsepower (530 kW) and approximately 720 Nm of torque at a maximum boost pressure of around 2.65 bar or 43 PSI. All that power is transferred to Audi’s signature Quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which provides superior traction, especially out of corners, giving it a significant “unfair advantage” over its rear-wheel-drive American competitors.
