The Melbourne-based simulator company Trak Racer, best known for its affordable, high-quality traditional car sim racing cockpits and peripherals, introduced a rather niche new product. During the SimRacing Expo in Charlotte, Trak Racer unveiled a Home Motorcycle Racing Simulator that not only looks cool, but is fun to handle and can also provide you with a healthy workout.
The Trak Racer TRZ is a purpose-built motorcycle racing simulator for home use, developed in collaboration with the RevZED Project, that was born as a passion project by Kris, a mechanical/structural engineer based in Western Canada. The simulator aims to accurately replicate the physics, posture, and unique dynamics of riding a motorbike, and is designed to be highly adjustable so it can replicate different riding ergonomics.
The TRZ uses a fully passive mechanical design, relying entirely on your physical inputs. This means there is virtually no latency between the bike movements and the simulator’s reaction. The mechanical framework naturally simulates real-time weight transfer, balance shifts, and the inherent instability of a motorcycle, leading to a very satisfying experience.
The simulator rig adapts dynamically to how much you tilt your body versus how much you turn the bars. To make it even more realistic, the simulator supports a hard-coded counter-steering feature that lets you turn the handlebars slightly left to lean and turn right. This feature can be toggled on or off. To tune the TRZ’s reaction to match your specific body weight and riding preferences, it features adjustable control sensitivity and a swappable spring system.
The bike simulator can be set up in three distinct configurations:
- Lean-Only Mode: Focuses almost entirely on body weight shifts to control the bike.
- Arcade Mode: Tailored more toward traditional handlebar steering input for casual titles.
- Full Simulation Mode: Integrates lean, steering, counter-steering, and weight transfer for the most authentic experience possible.
In essence, the TRZ is a plug-and-play USB controller, highly optimized for PC use. However, Trak Racer stated that (unofficial) compatibility with game consoles is possible depending on the adapter setup. Because the simulator’s circuit board identifies as a standard USB controller, the TRZ works out of the box with major motorcycle games such as GP Bikes, the MotoGP Series, the RIDE Series, Isle of Man TT, and more.
The TRZ base mechanical cockpit structure is an ecosystem platform designed to be expanded with future add-on accessories. In the foreseeable future, Trak Racer is planning to release accessories such as Telemetry and Force Feedback kits, Wind simulators, Haptic Feedback pucks, Dedicated shifters, and upgraded Rider Controls.
Furthermore, the rig can optionally be enhanced with cosmetic accessories like the front racing fairings and windscreens, further improving the race-bike aesthetics and riding immersion.
