Tutorial – How To Create A Custom GT4 Livery For Assetto Corsa Competizione

As a former member of a modding team, and having made hundreds of textures and liveries for virtual (and real) racing cars, I often receive questions regarding the process of creating your own custom livery in a simulator. Because I constantly struggle for time, making a written or video tutorial regarding the skinning topic was never an option.

However, there are some pretty talented community members out there who are willing to share their knowledge and skill and took the time to craft some pretty intuitive and interesting tutorials.

One of those community members is Austrian Stefan aka Boonatix. In a previous video, he showed us already how you can create a custom GT3 livery for your racing car in Assetto Corsa Competizione.

Now that the GT4 Pack DLC for Assetto Corsa Competizione is released, Boonatix is back with an updated Custom Livery Creation tutorial, and most importantly, a link to the needed GT4 Wireframe Templates.

Material properties for the layers. (Copy in either decals.json or sponsors.json):

  • Glossy: “baseRoughness”: 0, “clearCoat”: 1, “clearCoatRoughness”: 0, “metallic”: 0
  • Matte: “baseRoughness”: 0.45, “clearCoat”: 0.3, “clearCoatRoughness”: 0.6, “metallic”: 0
  • Satin: “baseRoughness”: 0.45, “clearCoat”: 0.1, “clearCoatRoughness”: 0.3, “metallic”: 0
  • Satin Metallic: “baseRoughness”: 0.3, “clearCoat”: 0.5, “clearCoatRoughness”: 0.3, “metallic”: 0.7
  • Metallic: “baseRoughness”: 0, “clearCoat”: 1, “clearCoatRoughness”: 0, “metallic”: 0.625
  • Chrome: “baseRoughness”: 0, “clearCoat”: 1, “clearCoatRoughness”: 0, “metallic”: 0.9

It is recommended not to use the full RGB range for colors. The darkest black should be 10/10/10 and the brightest white should be 237/237/237 RGB value for the game. However, when trying it out it does not seem to be an issue. The Resolution must be a maximum of 2048×2048 for decals.png and 4096×4096 for sponsors.png.

Separating your design into these two textures is only necessary if you want to use different material properties for the two layers with the corresponding .json files created.

Keep in mind that in Multiplayer mode, other users will not be able to see your custom livery as they do not have your texture files. They will just see the car with its base layer. This can be either the empty carbon car or the underlying built-in livery design the custom livery is based on.
